DESCRIZIONE
Monte Zebio was the theatre of one of the bloodiest battles of the Great War on the “Altopiano di Asiago” also described by Emilio Lussu in his book "A year in the Altopiano".
The route allows you to visit the monumental area of the mountain top, the Sassari Brigade cemetery and the trenches.
The route starts from the Ice Stadium square from where you can easily reach, even by car, Val Giardini. From here going up, first along an unpaved road and then along a splendid paved mule track built by Italian soldiers you reach the Sassari Brigade cemetery. Continuing, you can reach the top of “Scalambron” with the monument placed in memory of the historical facts (explosion of a mine) that occurred in June 1917. Going down towards Malga Zebio it is possible to reach the locality Crocetta di Zebio where you can find the trenches, part of the mighty Austrian defence line, recently restored thanks to the restoration work carried out by the Ecomuseum of the Great War of the Vicentine Pre-Alps.
For those who want to follow the itinerary on a mountain bike, there is a variation that descends along the main access road to the “Malga”. In addition to the historical heritage, Monte Zebio is renowned for the presence of Malga Zebio, where, from June to September there are cheesemakers (malghesi) who produce an excellent cheese. The route follows the CAI path 832b and 832.
