Until a few decades ago, it was usual to hear local people on the Plateau speaking Cimbrian, an ancient language spoken in this area for centuries. The language is not spoken anymore, but it left a strong cultural heritage even in everyday life.
The Cimbrian was a language spoken in seven municipalities of Vicenza, thirteen of Verona, and in the village of Luserna (Trento). It is a language that connects the old Bavarian and the ancient German and that miraculously survived in these mountains of the Veneto, protected by the isolated geographical location and the ancient agricultural economy. However, due to globalization, the language is slowly disappearing, leaving us only a few written documents.
The Cimbran Institute of Culture in Roana was founded to record still spoken forms of the language and to study the reasons that led to its extinguishment, with respect to the populations that brought the Cimbrian to the Plateau in the Early Middle Ages. This is a very important aspect from the historical point of view, since it helps to discover a lot of information about the Early Middle Ages: a crucial time for evolution of civilization in Veneto Region and in Europe.
The administration of the Veneto Region, the Curatorium Cimbricum of Munich, the Curatorium Cimbricum Veronense and the Istituto Mocheno Cimbro di Luserna (the “Mocheno-Cimbrian Institue of Luserna”), support these studies and activities and invite other Italian and foreign experts to cooperation.
Cimbrian language courses, conferences, folklore shows, monographs, dissertations, and various publications show the importance of this cultural project that has aroused a great positive reaction of the local population.
Members of the Institute and all employees of the museum hope to enrich the cultural and historical heritage of the region with a significant scientific contribution. Preserving the Cimbrian from the pressure of the mass culture feels like protecting one of the endangered species of Alps flowers or like saving the spirit of our land and a part of life of the local people.
