The Archaeological Museum is located in “Castelletto di Rotzo”, just 500 metres away from the archaeological park of Bostel.
The museum was built to bring under one roof many artefacts found during the years of systematic research and diggings on the territory of the Plateau. These findings are evidence of a strong historical and cultural heritage of this mountain land, inhabited by men since prehistoric times: men living on the Plateau exploited the environmental resources of the area, hunted game, bred cattle and sheep for milk and traded their products. Thus, the Plateau stands out as a unique homogeneous area, with a long history of human development and deserves a lot of attention to discover more about the past and to promote this knowledge.
The cultural goals of the museum are very important since it aims to spread the knowledge about the morphological, environmental, historical and cultural heritage of this fascinating land.
COLLECTION
The collections display artefacts testifying the deep antiquity and cultural peculiarity of the Plateau: one room is dedicated to Ancient Prehistory, presenting flint tools that tell us how the region was already inhabited by Neanderthal men and other flint tools from the Upper Paleolithic and Mesolithic periods, used for hunting.
There are also some remarkable findings from the Neolithic period, also called Recent Prehistory, which confirm the existence of seasonal villages where cattle breeding and transhumance were already practised.
The Iron Age, finally, is well presented in the village of Bostel, in Rotzo: this is a famous archaeological site, where the investigations led by the University of Padua revealed a lot of artefacts dating back to the second Iron Age (VI century b.C.). The museum devoted a whole room to the artefacts from this site, due to the systematic excavations on the site and abundance of findings. The reason for this large amount of findings is that the area between the valley and the alpine region used to be a place for economic exchange, and due to its position the village of Bostel was actively involved.
CULTURAL OPPORTUNITIES
The museum offers tours for groups or schools with an appointment throughout the year.
In addition, like the archaeological park of Bostel, the museum offers educational activities for schoolchildren on various topics with help of audio and video equipment. There are also practical educational workshops for professional archaeologists, to expand their knowledge on the early and late Prehistory. In addition to guided tours, the museum offers all year around - especially during high season in summer - thematic conferences, exhibitions, and professional seminars on various aspects of the history and environment of the Plateau.
